Abstract
The relation between modernity and pornography can be summarized as a "dialectic of pornographical enlightenment": The reduction of sexuality to a physical act (though nonetheless being socially constructed) has been considered either a grace or a perdition, waves of claims for liberation following periods of strict moral condemnation and so on. Living in times of ubiquitous availability of pornographic contents and signs - due to the basic provision via internet and a permissive constellation in global pop culture - the question might arise whether the dialectic has come to an end at least in Western societies. The statement will try to elaborate this by linking "Pornography's temptation" (Cornell) to the discourse on value shifts in apparently secularized cultures that encompass the changes in coding intimacy and concepts of love.
