Abstract
<p>On 14 June 1985, government officials from Belgium, Germany, France, Luxembourg and the Netherlands signed the Schengen Agreement, which aimed to gradually abolish controls at the internal borders of the participating countries. Ten years later, this vision became reality – barriers and stationary controls gave way in the Schengen area. On the anniversary in 2025, however, the Europe of open internal borders is under considerable pressure.
