Abstract
Most papers on modelling and forecasting prices on the German intraday market for electricity focus on the continuous trading up to 30 minutes before delivery but exclude the last phase of Single Delivery Area Trading (SDAT). This means that in the remaining time before delivery, there is no longer a single market, but market participants can trade only within their own control area. Therefore, liquidity fragments; in some control areas, often no trading takes place at all, in particular for products with delivery in the night. However, the fact that no prices from realized transactions can be observed does not imply that trading would not have been possible since the order book is usually not empty even during zero-trade intervals. In order to estimate profit opportunities in the SDAT phase, we move the analysis from realized transaction prices to executable prices derived from the order book, i.e., synthetic execution prices at which 1 MW, 2 MW, … could be bought or sold. For the operator of a generation or storage unit, these prices at which capacity of a certain size could be monetarized, conditional on prevailing order book depth and spread in the respective control area, are actually the economically (more) relevant objects.

In a case study, we compare the revenue opportunities in the intraday market during the SDAT phase with those in the balancing energy market and propose an option pricing model for estimating the value of a flexible capacity in both markets, conditioned on the latest available information. As the capacity can only be marketed once, the operator would place a bid in the market where higher revenues are expected. In this way, we obtain a simple rule-based framework if a flexible capacity should be offered in the intraday or balancing energy market. The option pricing model is estimated with synthetic executable prices from reconstructed intraday market order books, separately for each of the four German control areas during the SDAT phase, as well as activation data and cross-border marginal prices for the compensation of balancing energy from the European PICASSO-platform. As benchmark, we evaluate the revenues that could have been realized during the sample period in the individual markets from an ex-post analysis, which reveals already significant differences between "liquid" and "illiquid" control areas. A combined bidding strategy based on the rule-based approach leads to significant improvements, meaning that the model is economically meaningful despite its simplicity.
