Abstract
A wide offer of books translated from Western languages is available on the shelves of Shanghai bookstores and bookshops, ranging from popular novels to philosophical writings, and revealing an interesting picture of the city's tastes, interests, and concerns. Despite the impressive amount of titles, it is possibile to delineate some peculiarities of such an offer, as regards broadly-defined genres, the languages the original books were written in, as well as about when they were written. Based on my personal observations on the field, it is also possible to outline an increasingly neat differentiation among the urban booksellers, a phenomenon that may well be dictated by a growingly competitive market.
