The Myths in Sustainability Education Navigator: An Evidence-informed, and Accessible SE-Mythology

Abstract
In the field of sustainability education (e.g., Scoffham & Rawlinson, 2022), myths (MYTHSE) can pose significant (psychological) barriers to effective teaching and learning. The MYTHSE-Navigator emerges as a dynamic, digital repository designed to pre- (van der Linden, 2023) and debunk (Lewandowsky et al., 2020) widespread misconceptions in and about sustainability education (e.g., sustainability education is just another issue to be added to an overcrowded curriculum; the higher educated people are, the more they act sustainably), fostering critical thinking and resilience against misinformation. The MYTHSE-Navigator leverages the software Obsidian.md to create an accessible, sustainable, and evidence-informed SE-mythology (see Lilienfield et al., 2010), i.e., an interconnected collection of MYTHSE in the form of an OER-wiki. Through a design-based research approach (Anderson & Shattuck, 2012), incorporating literature review, peer and expert interviews, and user feedback, the navigator categorizes and debunks MYTHSE with structured refutations (Schroeder & Kucera, 2022). Currently it contains 15 MYTHSE and their refutations. Preliminary findings indicate easy accessibility to debunked myths and increased engagement from educators and students. In my talk, I will present the goals, exemplary contents, and use cases of this educational resource for sustainability education and discuss the navigator's potential role in promoting evidence-informed and critically reflective sustainability education.
