Abstract
Many strategies fail not for lack of vision, but because employees don’t understand or aren’t sold on enacting them. A new study found—and years of consultant work affirm—that while traditional, abstract strategy diagrams create clarity, metaphor- and story-based visuals—ships in storms, balloon journeys, mountain climbs—significantly raise employee engagement and intent to support execution. Effective metaphors pass the “4 Fs” test: fitting, familiar yet fresh, and facilitating action. Finding a metaphor that fits these principles will help leaders institutionalize meaningful visuals, turning strategy from a static plan into a lived organizational journey that employees own and sustain.
