At first glance, the term political risk seems to be mainly related to extreme events such as civil wars, insurrections and terrorist attacks. This is not surprising, since those issues are currently more than ever on the geopolitical agenda. However, firms that export to (state-owned) entities abroad or engage in foreign direct investments are regularly exposed to several other political risks. Global trade is jeopardized by failed states, protectionism, punitive duties, severe economic sanctions as well as embargoes. These and similar factors may be highly problematic for companies with multinational value chains or foreign trade relations, regardless of their size. Consequently, the understanding of political risks and the capabilities to manage them are quickly becoming critical success factors. Against this background, it is surprising that insurance coverage against political risk perils still seems to be uncharted territory for many companies. The same applies to some related risk management techniques and tools. Hence, in this comprehensive handbook, we combine academic insights with the long-standing experience of leading industry professionals to create both a primer for those who are new to the topic and a reference work for seasoned risk management practitioners.
