Abstract
Digital platforms represent new forms of organizing, where network intermediaries connect supply-side complementors with demand-side users to create value. However, value capture can be contested by competitors, leading to specific challenges in strategy formulation. Despite the growing body of research on platforms, our understanding of generic platform strategies that guide how platforms can position themselves in markets with rival platforms to sustain a competitive advantage remains incomplete. In response, we first introduce a typology of generic platform strategies that combines content strategies on the supply side (collect, curate, and create) with user strategies on the demand side (accumulate, activate, and associate). These combinations produce distinct strategic positions along a diffusion–differentiation spectrum, each with different implications for value creation and capture. Second, we develop a set of testable propositions regarding strategic choices and their consequences in the context of two competing platforms. Specifically, we expand on the notion of platform vulnerabilities, which can trigger competitor attacks on the supply and demand sides through competitive substitution, competitive separation, competitive absorption, or competitive complementarity. Our chapter contributes to both scholarship and managerial practice by examining strategy choices across platform sides and providing a framework for analyzing the strategic positioning of platforms in competitive settings.
Abstract (De)
