Abstract
Academic excellence has long been a foundational principle for all the stakeholders involved in higher education: students and their families, faculty and staff, universities and agencies, employers and society at large. But what does 'academic excellence' mean? How it is defined and measured? What impact does it have in national and international contexts or in the short-and long-term perspectives? What is the link between academic excellence and university rankings? The pioneering book edited by Maria Yudkevich, Philip G. Altbach and Jamil Salmi elaborates on these and similar questions. The volume, which was published in late 2023 by MIT press and includes a free openaccess option, is devoted to academic excellence initiatives (AEIs) from a global perspective.
