Abstract
The first Handbook on Corruption in Higher Education presents a comprehensive analysis of corruption within academia, highlighting its detrimental impact on the integrity of education. Academic corruption manifests in various monetary and non-monetary forms, including but not limited to bribery, cheating, plagiarism, and fraudulent admissions, as well as unethical behavior among students, faculty, administration, and other stakeholders. Academic corruption can be visible or less visible, with or without direct student involvement, but in any case, it undermines trust in the most important institutions. This Handbook brings together diverse theoretical perspectives, empirical studies, and case analyses from scholars and practitioners. It explores the role of international organizations in combating corruption and suggests remedies for promoting academic integrity. By addressing these challenges, the Handbook aims to advance the discourse on corruption in higher education and provide strategies for fostering ethical academic environments in an era increasingly influenced by digital technology and artificial intelligence.
