Abstract
This talk uses the concept of progress to explore how concepts are both essentially contested as well as participate in active contestation.  It interweaves personal reflections about engaging with the concept of progress for some years with concrete instances of how the concept can lose previous meanings and acquire new ones. Using medicine as a case study, it shows how considerations of equity have consistently challenged definitions of medical progress that improve the health and lives of the few.
