Abstract
This entry describes the structure and background of export processing zones, also called free trade zones. These zones are oases of deregulation in an already deregulated global capitalism. They are meant to boost an export-led growth in developing countries. However, there are also several concerns raised by unions, NGOs (nongovernmental organizations), and ethical consumer groups.
