Abstract
Startups by students and recent graduates are increasingly considered as an important part of university entrepreneurship which contribute to the knowledge transfer from research to the market. In this paper we analyse students' entrepreneurial activities at 61 European universities. Using a multilevel approach we are able to show that individual as well as contextual determi-nants influence students' propensity to start a business. While taking first steps towards founding a business is largely determined by individual-level factors, the importance of the university entrepreneurial climate and the regional context increase for the actual establishment of a new venture. Our study contributes to a better understanding of the formation of student start-ups and the role of universities in knowledge transfer.
