Abstract
The rapid developments in the use of digital technologies and their fundamental impact on the structure and operation of entire organizations as well as the nature of service provision itself are increasingly leading to new types of network structures consisting of autonomous, yet interdependent actors. These so-called ecosystems can be understood as unique structures on the organizational spectrum, which combine characteristics of the market as well as of hierarchically integrated companies. To better understand the phenomenon and to distinguish it from other objects of investigation, on the one hand, and to support business decision-making processes, on the other hand, models are often used that direct the focus of analysis to essential aspects of the phenomenon and provide support for their discussion through their structure. However, an analysis of existing academic literature shows that existing models (such as Porter's Value Chain) do not adequately describe the ecosystem phenomenon and the specific value creation logic, which is characterized by a non-sequential, inter-organizational system logic. This work deals with this technology-driven phenomenon and examines the purpose as well as the specific value creation logic of these forms of organizations. Building on the design science research paradigm, two research artifacts are developed to support both re-searchers in the field of business information systems and practitioners from different industries in understanding ecosystems, de-scribing their functioning, and ultimately realizing participation in such ecosystems.
