In today’s economy, platform ecosystems are among the most valuable firms. While previous literature has primarily taken the native platform owner’s perspective, platform ecosystems can offer enormous opportunities for growth and increased profitability for incumbents as well. Thus, numerous incumbents are building platform ecosystems. Drawing on the dynamic capabilities’ literature as a powerful lens for incumbents operating in change, we investigate relevant dynamic capabilities of incumbents building platform ecosystems. We apply a novel theory-building approach based on machine learning to detect patterns in incumbents’ dynamic capabilities by using a large-scale dataset of insurers. We aim to contribute to platform research by examining incumbents’ responses to emerging platform ecosystems.
