We empirically re-inquire the nature of the commodity based on a multi-year ethnographic research into a consumption community centered on designing, building and using material objects, namely racing drones. Where prior literature has framed commodities and craft objects as antagonistic and mutually exclusive, objectual practice in this community centers on knowledge practices that combine and explore assemblages of both. Drawing on science studies and the notion of blackboxing, we unpack the relationship between commodities and craft objects based on their epistemic nature. We uncover the overlooked epistemic dimension of commodification and its importance for theorizing materiality in CCT.
