Data mining is applied in various fields, but companies struggle with its implementation and use for business performance forecasting. Following a multiple case study approach, we identify three patterns in the way companies use data mining in this specific context. Two of them are successful and one, in which companies pursue too many objectives at the same time seems to lead to a more complicated implementation or even the abandon of the project.
