A focal point of interest lies in the steel industry, given its substantial contribution to emissions and the notable attribute of steel being fully recyclable. Hence, closing material loops to ensure the preservation of material value and supply security is of substantial importance. Yet, until today, supply chains are still characterized by interrupted information streams that prevent circular material flows. Digital platforms are attributed to overcoming these shortcomings due to their ability to moderate ecosystems and render technological connectivity. However, industrial companies lack knowledge of how digital platforms can be used to design closed material loops. Therefore, this paper is built on a longitudinal case study of a joint venture between a recycling and steel melting plant company aiming at creating a digital platform to close the material flow of steel. Six design priorities, structured along the three core building blocks of digital platform ecosystems and the four core dimensions of collective action theory (CAT), have been derived to guide managers in designing digital platforms for the CE-specific context. Item type:Publication, Leading the transition to multi-sided platforms (MSPs) in a B2B context – The case of a recycling SME(2024-01-01); ;Roman Haenggi ;Leonardo LagliaDigital multi-sided platforms (MSP) are emerging as powerful forces to disrupt existing industry value chains in B2B. SMEs can play a crucial role in the emergence of digital platform ecosystems. Although much research has been carried out on the design and governance of digital platforms, research mainly focused on greenfield approaches in B2C and neglected the process of transformation of an established company in B2B to a MSP. Recognizing this unique opportunity for SMEs, we addressed this research gap by examining the journey of a B2B-SME to a MSP, capturing and presenting the dynamics of barriers, actions, and outcomes as generative mechanisms. Applying Moore's (1993) ecosystem lifecycle model, we developed a process model guiding SMEs to MSPs and discussed four propositions representing key activities supporting the transformation, reorganization, and emergence of the ecosystem. The results provide empirical evidence for the research on platform ecosystem emergence in B2B value chain networks. Item type:Publication, Integrate or separate: lean and digitalization programs through the lens of boundary work management(2024); ; ; Purpose-Although benefits are promising, many companies face problems leveraging synergies between Lean and Digitalization at the program management level. This paper aims to identify activities to manage the boundaries of Lean and Digitalization programs. Design/methodology/approach-The research design follows a cross-industry multiple-case study approach. A total of 14 interviews were conducted with Lean and Digitalization experts from 10 companies. Interview quotes were mapped on a pre-defined list of descriptive codes and iteratively merged and excluded. Findings-We identified 12 activities by which companies manage the boundaries of their Lean and Digitalization programs. Three distinct boundary management approaches could be identified: collaborative, configurational, and competitive. A collaborative approach fosters governance, the belief in synergies, and the development of combined artifacts. A configurational approach creates combined responsibilities, assesses areas of collaboration, and fosters interaction across the organization. A competitive approach creates unclear responsibilities and exchange, perceives no added value in integration and follows separated implementation of Lean and Digitalization programs. Originality/value-This study sheds light on the boundaries of Lean and Digitalization programs and identifies activities to manage them. We derive propositions for the Lean and Digitalization program management. Item type:Publication, Scaling Digital Solutions in Healthcare: Paradoxical Tensions in Provider – Customer Relations and Coping Strategies(IEEE, 2023-10-18); ;Jonathan Paulus Rösler; ; Pejvak OghaziAn aging population, a lack of qualified medical staff, and rising costs in the healthcare sector pose major challenges to many societies. Implementing digital solutions in hospitals is a promising response to these challenges without compromising the quality of patient care. Nevertheless, the adoption of digital solutions in the healthcare environment is progressing more slowly than might be desirable. Adopting a paradox perspective, we study tensions in the relationship between the providers of digital solutions and hospitals (their customers) that can explain the slow uptake. Drawing on 39 interviews, our findings reveal nine tensions related to the three dimensions of a business model (value proposition; value creation and delivery; value capture). We also identify four coping strategies that allow solution providers to deal with these tensions, especially when building digital solutions in new ecosystems. Item type:Publication, Use of DES to develop a decision support system for lot size decision-making in manufacturing companies(2022); ;Liao, Shuangqing ;Hänggi, RomanThere exists a wide range of optimization models in the Operations Management (OM) community to solve complex problems such as lot sizing. However, their practical performance is often criticized due to the complexity of implementation and insufficient applicability in real-world decision processes. These theory-driven approaches are either simple to compute, but only focus on single aspects of the decision without being able to capture the practical problem comprehensively, or are complex computational models with limited practicability. We apply a Design Science Research approach to resolve this issue and show how lot size decision-making models should be designed to thoroughly support managers. Our innovative model combines Discrete Event Simulation (DES) with OM methods and is developed and tested in a case study in the metal processing industry. Item type:Publication, The smart factory as a key construct of industry 4.0: A systematic literature reviewIndustry 4.0 is a ubiquitous term throughout general newspapers, on company websites or in scientific journals. One of its key constructs is the smart factory, envisioned as a future state of a fully connected manufacturing system, mainly operating without human force by generating, transferring, receiving and processing necessary data to conduct all required tasks for producing all kinds of goods. Although the understanding of smart factory concepts has been sharpened in the last years, it is still difficult for industrial companies to establish a concrete strategy roadmap within the jungle of different terminologies, ideas and concepts. To generate further clarity and to consolidate the previous findings around smart factory for researchers as well as for practitioner, we conducted a systematic literature review. For this purpose, we chose a five steps approach: Scope definition, topic conceptualisation, literature search, literature analysis and synthesis, and synthesis of future research questions. During our review, we found that research within each perspective is fragmented and unequally advanced. Most publications treat single use cases with low generalizability, often rely upon machine data, typically have a technical nature and seldom incorporate impact estimations. In this paper, our key academic and practical contribution lies in the categorisation of the selected publications into eight thematic distinct perspectives within the sphere of smart factory: Decision making, cyber-physical systems, data handling, IT infrastructure, digital transformation, human machine interaction, IoT, and cloud manufacturing and services. This article presents a method that permits the identification of use cases according to the strategic priorities of a manufacturing company.
