Item type:Publication, Let Me Transform You: Introducing Transformative Experiences in Entrepreneurship to Refine UncertaintyThe relationship between entrepreneurship and uncertainty is ambivalent: while uncertainty creates entrepreneurial opportunities, it simultaneously poses a fundamental challenge. Despite extensive theorizing, conceptual ambiguity persists regarding the locus, origin, and behavioral implications of uncertainty in entrepreneurship. This conceptual paper introduces the notion of transformative experiences (TEs) to enrich this discourse. TEs are experiences that are both epistemically and personally transformative. They alter individuals' knowledge and identities in ways that are neither accessible nor predictable ex ante. We argue that the uncertainty associated with TEs does not primarily stem from subjective perception, ignorance, or external environment. Instead, it arises from the potential of an unpredictable transformation of the decision-maker. This perspective adds a novel angle to the debate on the locus of uncertainty and extends knowledge problems beyond factual limitations to include qualia-related dimensions. We further show that under conditions of TE-induced uncertainty, traditional mitigation and coping approaches, such as information gathering, theorizing, or experimentation, may prove inadequate. To address this issue, we propose an action-oriented stance grounded in an attitude of "not wanting to know" and not trying to minimize uncertainty. The paper concludes by outlining avenues for future research on the role of TEs in entrepreneurship, with particular attention to decision-making strategies, decision outcomes, and outcome evaluations. Item type:Publication, Human-centric AI governance: what the EU public values, what it really, really valuesThe EU and other institutions worldwide have committed to aligning AI with human values to ensure that the technology contributes to the common good. Yet, criticism persists that debates over which values should guide this alignment are dominated by private and public organizations that prioritize technological considerations. Societal perspectives that emphasize broader, non-normative values are often marginalized. This exclusion generates a democratic deficit and risks forgoing the advantages of aligning AI with citizens' public valuesnamely trust, acceptance and public value creation. To address this gap, we empirically examine EU citizens' regulatory and value preferences regarding AI and its regulation, drawing on two complementary studies and Public Values theory and tools: one mixed-methods study of the EU's Public Consultation and one study based on the quantitative assessment of a newly developed AI Public Value (PV) Landscape. Our findings show that EU citizens (i) prefer binding regulation of AI, (ii) consider both ethical and technological principles as well as broader, non-normative societal values, especially along the moral-ethical value dimension, important, and (iii) serve as a conciliatory force capable of balancing business interests against those of state and NGO stakeholders. These results underscore the importance of aligning AI with broader PVs, reinforcing ethical foundations, and enhancing public inclusion in AI governance to achieve truly human-centric and socially accepted AI.Type:journal articleJournal:Government Information QuarterlyVolume:42Issue:4Scopus© Citations 6 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Connecting value creation for society with work engagement: the relevance of an organization's public value as an extension of the job characteristics model(2024); ; Jessica BardeliSince the seminal work by Hackman and Oldham (1975) there has been a growing body of literature demonstrating how work characteristics can positively both organizations and their employees. While the very nature of the task or job at hand is well explored, insufficient attention has been given to the social and cultural context in which the work is done (Spreitzer & Cameron, 2012). Based on Meynhardt’s public value approach (2009, 2015), we investigate whether organizational public value acts as an additional work characteristic in the Job Characteristics Model (JCM), thus extending the model. Specifically, we theorize that organizational public value is an additional unique resource for employees and social context work characteristic in the JCM that is positively related to employees work engagement. Additionally, our study analyzes that the positive relationship between the work characteristics, including organizational public value, and work engagement is mediated by self-efficacy. Moreover, we analyze whether employees working in industries with a public focus integrated into their core business will experience higher levels of public value in their jobs than employees in other industries. To test our hypotheses, we conducted a representative online survey in different public and non-public organizations in Switzerland (N = 949). Overall, the results support our hypotheses and contribute to close the gap by taking social context factors into the JCM and to reveal processes between the macro-level (organizational public value, work characteristics) and micro-level (employees work experience). Further theoretical and practical implications as well as future research avenues are discussed in the paper.Type:journal articleJournal:Current PsychologyScopus© Citations 4 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Die schönsten Uhren der Welt: Purpose-Marketing bei A. Lange & SöhneMuch is known about the significance of Purpose for organizations, yet little is understood about its genesis. Our study conducted at the watch manufacturer A. Lange & Söhne illustrates the individual nature of Purpose-making among organizational members and the influencing factors involved. Leadership should perceive this diversity as both a challenge and an opportunity.Type:journal articleJournal:OrganisationsEntwicklungVolume:2024Issue:2 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Public administration contributes to happiness: a study on the relationship between public value and happiness in Switzerland(2024-02-01); ; ;Jessica BardeliBrieger, StevenIn public management research, the focus in the public value debate has been on public administration organizations' broader societal outcomes. Public value describes how public administrations form a vital part of the social context in which people develop and grow. However, there has not yet been an analysis of how public administration contributes to happiness in society. In this study, we empirically analyze the relationship between people's happiness and the public value of public administration. Our approach is based on a unique Swiss survey dataset comprising 870 individuals. We find a positive relationship between public administration's public value and happiness. We also find preliminary evidence with a moderation analysis that the relationship between a value-creating public administration sector and self-reported happiness is stronger for public administration employees. While correlation studies cannot claim causal explanations and common method bias may additionally limit any research in social science, we took a number of measures to mitigate related problem. We tested our model in two samples and took both several procedural techniques and a survey design minimizing common method bias.Type:journal articleJournal:International Journal of Public Sector ManagementScopus© Citations 7 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
