    AOM 2025 PDW: Launching Micro-Communities to Support Impact Scholarship

    Impact-driven scholars addressing grand challenges often struggle with designing, implementing, writing up, and publishing their research because it requires novel approaches and perspectives that deviate from mainstream management science. Communities of practice can support these scholars in creating impact. The purpose of this workshop is to launch or revitalise self-organized micro-communities of impact scholars interested in related ontologies, methods, phenomena, or theories. To do so, we have developed a playbook for micro-communities of impact scholars that we will pilot in this workshop. The workshop concept and the playbook draw on our experience of initiating and developing a spontaneous micro-community that has supported our PhD journeys. We want to explore the resonance of the playbook with the attendees and spark their curiosity and excitement to form or revitalise their own micro-communities. The PDW participants will benefit from a supportive, action-oriented environment tailored to their challenges and aspirations. The workshop provides an interactive platform for sharing experiences, individual reflection, building connections, and launching new or revitalising existing micro-communities for impact. With this workshop, we aim to create impact on the individual, organizational, and societal levels by illuminating the role of developmental friendship in self-organised communities and contributing to more relevant and rigorous research on addressing grand challenges.

    AOM 2025 PDW: Advancing Action Research for Doctoral Students and Early Career Faculty

    This interactive and experiential PDW brings together doctoral students (both Ph.D. and professional doctoral candidates), early career faculty and experienced faculty to collaboratively strengthen their action research capabilities. Designed as a supportive space for scholar- practitioners, the workshop facilitates exploration of the processes involved in conducting robust action research. Organized as a dynamic “collaborative conversation,” the PDW fosters dialogue and reflection around the central question: How can we best support scholar-practitioners at the early stages of their journey in exploring action research as a viable, impactful, and contextually relevant methodological option that remains deeply relevant to their own context and goals? Through interactive discussions and collaborative methods, participants will uncover valuable insights, share effective strategies, and co-create actionable recommendations. These outcomes aim to enhance the rigor, relevance, and overall impact of action research practices in academic and professional contexts. The primary outcome of the PDW will be a set of actionable recommendations for integrating key insights into doctoral curricula and professional development programs. Additionally, participants will gain a deeper understanding of action research principles, establish meaningful connections within the scholar-practitioner action research community, and leave with practical tools to advance their own action research projects.
