Item type:Publication, Measuring open innovation practices through topic modelling: Revisiting their impact on firm financial performanceDespite the popularity of open innovation in recent years, studies examining the impact of open innovation upon firm performance have shown mixed results. Previous empirical work on this topic is often based on surveys or archival sources, usually done either in isolation or in aggregate through employing proxy measures. In contrast, we employ an unsupervised learning technique (i.e., topic modelling) utilizing natural language processing to extract information on companies’ open innovation practices, creating an initial keyword basket for future development. We then revisit the relationship between open innovation practices and financial performance of firms. The results show that a firm’s overall openness level is associated with improved financial performance. More granular practices developed from our approach, however, show variations. The inverted U-shaped relationships are observed in specific open innovation practices but not in all, partly supporting the existence of the openness paradox from prior literature. The complementarity between internal R&D and individual open innovation practices also varies by practice. Further, the influence of these open innovation practices also varies by sector. Our findings prompt us to conclude that open innovation’s impact on financial performance is nuanced, and that there is no uniform set of best practices to practice open innovation effectively.Type:journal articleJournal:Technovation - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Strategies for net zero: A configurational approach(Academy of Management, 2025-06-17); ; ; ; Rhea Louise RiemkeFirms face complex temporal challenges in achieving decarbonization progress, requiring them to align short-term emission reductions with long-term net-zero strategies. While prior research has explored environmental reporting and emission reduction targets, little is known about how firms manage and resolve the inherent tensions in implementing decarbonization strategies. This study adopts a configurational perspective and employs Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) to investigate the temporal interplay between governance mechanisms and (collaborative) innovation efforts in corporate decarbonization journeys. Our findings contribute to the literature on climate change management and innovation in two key ways. First, we demonstrate how firms at different stages of their decarbonization pathways utilize distinct combinations of governance and innovation strategies, each addressing temporal tensions in unique ways. Second, we highlight the pivotal role of collaborative innovation in complementing internal efforts, enabling firms to simultaneously advance short-term and long-term decarbonization objectives. By integrating governance and innovation perspectives, this study provides novel insights into the temporal dimensions of corporate decarbonization and offers actionable strategies for firms pursuing ambitious emission reduction targets.Type:conference paperJournal:Academy of Management ProceedingsVolume:2025Issue:1 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item type:Publication, The Open Innovation / Business Model Innovation NexusDespite the fact that business model innovation (BMI) is an important driver of business success, most studies on BMI have emphasized conceptual definitions, content analysis, and literature reviews. Theoretical underpinnings are often cited as necessary to advance this field. This chapter illustrates that some key attributes of open innovation (OI) support the advance of business model and BMI research, and this link has not been investigated comprehensively by prior research. The development of OI and BMI keep pace with each other in a dynamic innovation process. To develop a consistent body of knowledge on BMI and OI, this chapter sheds light on how OI shapes business models and the relationship between OI and BMI by providing a framework and two short case studies and discussing their implications.Type:forthcoming
