Abstract
Based on rapidly changing market conditionsand increasing pressure on cost and productivity, companies in different industries have startedto concentrate on their core competencies andto decrease vertical range of manufacture. Thisresulted in an increasing dependency between theproducing companies and their suppliers. Enterprisenetworks are formed creating the necessityto focus on the strategic development of supplynetwork partners. While currently strategic purchasingmainly deals with direct suppliers, futurestrategic purchasing needs to deal with flexibleand dynamic supply networks. This results in aparadigm shift in the domain of strategic sourcingfrom a supplier-centric to a supply networkscope. In order to support the paradigm shift, the development of a reference model specifyingthe organizational and functional implicationsis necessary. This chapter therefore introduces areference model for the domain of strategic supplynetwork development extending the traditionalframe of reference in strategic sourcing to a supplynetwork perspective.
