Abstract
Scientific disciplines have ways of demonstrating scientific credibility that go beyond using scientific methods, such as a certain habitus, or ways of staging at conferences and in photographs. Such self-presentation demonstrates belonging to a particular discipline. But what happens to this disciplinary performance when scientists work in interdisciplinary contexts? This contribution examines the emergence of ice core paleoclimatology as an interdisciplinary field between laboratory physics, field glaciology, and climate science. Using visual representations from the 1950s to the 1990s, I follow laboratory physicists as they shifted into polar research and analyze how their representations changed as they left their discipline of origin and established a new interdisciplinary research field. In doing so, this paper aims to contribute to the broader question of how scientific credibility has been established in interdisciplinary contexts.
