Abstract
Since early discussions regarding flexibility of manufacturing companies, a growing number of authors have made significant contribution to our understanding of flexibility. The discussion invariably focuses on definitions of flexibility or, in some cases there is an emphasis on one specific form of flexibility. Consequently, the field has become unstructured and nontransparent. There is a need for clarification of what is meant by flexibility, within specific functions and at the level of the firm. Only then can there be appreciation of issues for its implementation.
In this paper a model and procedure for the implementation of flexibility will be discussed. Data from action research has identified a raster covering relevant dimensions of flexibility that contribute to a firm's sustainability. Based on this raster, a five step approach is developed, that defines the types of flexibility, the derivation of an appropriate level of flexibility, and its implementation. Case studies are used to test the conceptual model.
