Abstract
Until the mid-20th century, the study of ice and the study of climate had little in common. Today, however, ice research is an indispensable pillar of climate science. How did the idea of past climates in the ice develop? And what consequences did this have for glaciology and climate understanding? This presentation focuses on the establishment of ice core paleoclimatology as a new scientific research field in the second half of the twentieth century. It analyses how the Cold War, Swiss national politics, and international expeditions to Greenland influenced climate and ice research. In doing so, it provides an eminent example how science is embedded in cultural values and national and international politics, and how it can shape perceptions of the environment.
