Abstract
Pumped-storage plants provide the flexibility renewable grids demand, and their machines bear the cost in frequent mode changes and wear. Monitoring rests on vibration and plant data, with airborne acoustics unproven at full scale. We propose an alternative approach: healthy behavior modeled per operating mode from unlabeled data, deviations reported with calibrated confidence, and direction recovered by an array. A five-day analysis of a 295 MW machine, validated by observed impacts, defines the regularities and the limits our approach faces.
