Abstract
This presentation examines the intersection of fictional apocalyptic narratives and the harsh realities of modern environmental crises. By utilizing Cormac McCarthy’s novel The Road as a primary lens, the authors explore how dystopian stories help society process anxieties regarding climate change and ecological collapse. The material contrasts the total devastation found in literature with current scientific data, including planetary boundaries, wildlife decline, and recent extreme weather events like Hurricane Helene. It ultimately suggests that while fictional characters struggle for bare survival, contemporary society exists in a pre-apocalyptic state where action is still possible. The project aims to foster emotional acceptance of loss while using "meliorism" as a strategic guide to navigate a changing world.

Diese Präsentation untersucht die Schnittstelle zwischen fiktionalen apokalyptischen Erzählungen und den harten Realitäten moderner Umweltkrisen. Ausgehend von Cormac McCarthys Roman „The Road“ als zentralem Bezugspunkt untersuchen die Autoren, wie dystopische Geschichten der Gesellschaft helfen, Ängste im Zusammenhang mit dem Klimawandel und dem ökologischen Zusammenbruch zu verarbeiten. Das Material stellt die in der Literatur dargestellte totale Verwüstung aktuellen wissenschaftlichen Daten gegenüber, darunter die planetarischen Grenzen, der Rückgang von Biodiversität und jüngste extreme Wetterereignisse wie der Hurrikan Helene. Es legt letztlich nahe, dass fiktionale Figuren zwar um ihr nacktes Überleben kämpfen, die heutige Gesellschaft sich jedoch in einem vorapokalyptischen Zustand befindet, in dem Handeln noch möglich ist. Das Projekt zielt darauf ab, die emotionale Akzeptanz von Verlust zu fördern und gleichzeitig den „Meliorismus“ als strategischen Leitfaden für den Umgang mit einer sich wandelnden Welt zu nutzen.
