PublicationCollective Intelligence Model: How to Describe Collective Intelligence(Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2011-06-14)
;Altman, JoernKraemer, BerndA large number of scientific research exists, describing forms of collective intelligence (e.g. Wikipedia). But there are only few publications that describe how different forms of collective intelligence be described in general. In this paper, we therefore describe an approach how to characterise different forms of collective intelligence. We draw from existing research and build a comprehensive model and identify further characteristics to describe collective intelligence in a fine-grained manner. We propose a model with different characteristics, like form of cooperation, organisational pattern, and decision making process, which distinctively describe forms of collective intelligence and suggest possible attribute values.Type: conference paperScopus© Citations 10 -
PublicationUse of Swarm Intelligence to Involve Customers in Product Innovation(Springer, 2010-04-15)
;Bastiaens, TheoKraemer, BerndFor today’s customers there is a need for integrated products and service bundles, e.g. a trip with flights, accommodation, local activities, home care during absence etc. To define such bundles, the collective intelligence of customers can be used. Thus, more customer-oriented products (bundles) can be created and the quality of bundles can be increased through the participation of many customers. By letting the collective in the form of customers participate, a solution is being created, which is better than any solution defined by a single company or any individual of the collective. To achieve this, swarm intelligence, as it can be found with social insects, is being transferred into an innovative digital platform. This platform enables customers to work together as a swarm and provides the means for customers to collectively design bundles and learn from each other.Type: conference paper -
PublicationDesign of new business models for service integrators by creating information-driven value webs based on customers' collective intelligence(IEEE Computer Societys, 2009-01-05)
;Ickler, HenrikSprague, Ralph H.In this paper we present an approach applying swarm intelligence to digital markets. The supply side often faces the challenge how to effectively identify customers' needs in order to design new products and services. When considering intermediaries ("service integrators") this task becomes even more difficult. Swarm intelligence might provide new means to tap into customers' collective intelligence and creativity in order to construct bundles of products and services basing on an outside-in-perspective. Our research results so far comprise an ontology structuring the various terms in this field and the concept of a swarm-driven value web. Furthermore, we present the swarm characteristics we are going to use for a prototype which enables a customer swarm to design bundles of products and services. During this stage and by means of observation the service integrator uses the customer swarm's collective intelligence as a source of information (product/service design). Thus, demand and supply are aligned by a coordinated information flow and moreover potential for new business models arises.Type: conference paper -
