Item type:Publication, User, Use & Utility Research: The Digital User as New Design Perspective in Business and Information Systems Engineering(Springer Gabler, 2014-02-01); ;Karagiannis, Dimitris ;Kolbe, Lutz ;Krueger, JensLeifer, LarryBusiness Information Systems Engineering (BISE) is at a turning point. Planning, designing, developing and operating IT used to be a management task of a few elites in public administrations and corporations. But the continuous digitization of nearly all areas of life changes the IT landscape fundamentally. Success in this new era requires to put the human perspective the digital user at the very heart of the new digitized service-led economy. BISE faces not just a temporary trend but a complex socio-technical phenomenon with far reaching implications. The challenges are manifold and have major consequences for all stakeholders, both in information systems and management research and in practice. Corporate processes have to be re-designed from the ground up, starting with the user's perspective, thus putting usage experience and utility of the individual center stage. The digital service economy leads to highly personalized application systems while organizational functions are being fragmented.Entirely new ways of interacting with information systems, in particular beyond desktop IT, are being invented and established. These fundamental challenges require novel approaches to innovation and development methods as well as adequate concepts for enterprise or service system architectures. Gigantic amounts of data are being generated at an accelerating rate by an increasing number of devices data that need to be managed. In order to tackle these extraordinary challenges we introduce "user, use utility' as a new field of BISE that focuses primarily on the digital user, his or her usage behavior and the utility associated with system usage in the digitized service-led economy. The research objectives encompass the development of theories, methods and tools for systematic requirement elicitation, systems design, and business development for successful Business Information Systems Engineering in a digitized economy information systems that digital users enjoy using. This challenge calls for leveraging insights from various scientific disciplines such as Design, Engineering, Computer Science, Psychology and Sociology. BISE can provide an integrating perspective, thereby assuming a pivotal role within the digitized service-led economy.Type:journal articleJournal:Business & Information Systems Engineering (BISE)Volume:6Issue:1Scopus© Citations 64 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item type:Publication, Toward a model of effective monitoring of IT application development and maintenance suppliers in multisourced environmentsMany international corporations are now adopting multisourcing approaches to information technology (IT). Multisourcing is described as the disciplined provision and blending of services from multiple suppliers both outside the company and within the company. This approach to meeting business goals is primarily concerned with the relationship between the client organization and the multiple suppliers. To date, aspects relating to performance measurement and governance have scarcely been covered in the literature, and established IT frameworks such as control objectives for information and related technology (COBIT) provide imprecise approaches for monitoring suppliers. In this study, we intend to sharpen the existing understanding of how corporations manage and monitor suppliers in a multisourced environment and of why specific key performance indicators (KPIs) are utilized. We provide insights using a real-life example of the monitoring of IT application development and maintenance (IT ADM) suppliers and suggest monitoring dimensions based on a cross-case analysis. Based on inter-rater reliability, we further derive a minimum set of corresponding IT ADM KPIs. This study is expected to help corporations facing similar challenges by providing a set of essential KPIs to monitor IT ADM suppliers.Type:journal articleJournal:International Journal of Accounting Information Systems (IJAIS)Volume:14Issue:3Scopus© Citations 8 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, From Palaces to Yurts - Why Requirements Engineering Needs Design ThinkingThe German saying “von Palästen zu Zelten” compares different systems to different levels of flexibility and agility - that is, “from palaces to yurts.” Requirements engineering systems are geared for developing information system palaces and aren't what's needed for today's world of rapidly changing, app-enabled products. These Web and mobile apps are small, require rapid development, must closely fit customer needs, and change often. Requirements engineering for these would greatly benefit from design thinking - that is, a human-centered, rapid-prototypying method for innovative design. All house construction requires a solid basement, a supporting infrastructure that provides efficiency in maintenance, and some adjustable elements that will be continuously updated for the house's lifetime. Large, complex houses provide more comfortable living space, but more groundwork is needed if any changes are necessary. IT systems are similar. To meet today's challenges with small, easily changed systems that are more function than infrastructure, we need more that are like yurts rather than palaces.Type:journal articleJournal:IEEE Internet ComputingVolume:17Issue:2Scopus© Citations 56 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item type:Publication, Finding Balanced Scorecards for Business Driven IT Service Portfolio Management: A Literature Review(IGI Publishing, 2012); ; ; During the last decades information technology (IT) management has changed significantly. Starting from being a costly and rare resource in its very beginnings IT has evolved into a vital enabler for almost any kind of business today. This development demands for highly flexible management concepts allowing the business to actively control and govern IT performance. A meanwhile widely used approach for multi-dimensional performance measurement in the context of IT management is the Balanced Scorecard (BSC). With this article we aim at investigating the state of the art of IT BSC use through a comprehensive literature analysis. Moreover, we evaluate the adaptability of the different types of this concept to the most recent developments in IT management. Our findings show that even though an opulence of IT BSCs exists, they do not reflect recent developments of increased business orientation in IT management. We suggest that two new BSCs utilizing such business metrics need to be developed: A generic BSC for IT services and IT service portfolios.Type:journal articleJournal:International Journal of IT/Business Alignment and Governance (IJITBAG)Volume:3Issue:1 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item type:Publication, A methodical procedure for designing consumer oriented on-demand IT service propositionsIT providers are increasingly facing the challenge to adapt their previously resource oriented service portfolios in order to offer their customers services which explicitly support business processes. Such customer centric service propositions, however, seem to contradict the demand for standardized and automated operational IT processes more than traditional IT service offers, as they are even more subject to customer individual reengineering efforts due to permanently changing business requirements. In order to reconcile increased efficiency in operational processes and effectiveness in consumer oriented service propositions, we propose (1) to predefine all service propositions in consideration of both consumer oriented commitments and operational processes, and (2) to allow for standardized customization by offering a selection of complementary service propositions that extend commitments regarding customer oriented functionality and performance. Such service propositions are aligned with a company's entities such as workplaces. Thereby the customer organization is enabled to trace, control and adjust commitments, value and expenses of IT services per entity in its business. We introduce a procedural model for designing and on-demand requesting this kind of service propositions, and we illustrate the model's application and impact by examples taken from two large projects with an associated IT provider.Type:journal articleJournal:Information Systems and e-Business ManagementVolume:9Issue:2Scopus© Citations 6 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Balancing Customer Requirements and IT Service Standardization - A Procedural Reference Model for Individualized IT Service Agreement ConfigurationsIT service providers are increasingly urged to stringently align their service portfolio with the IT support of their customers' business processes. Consequently, both IT expenses and its strategic contribution to value creation are expected to become subject to heightened transparency. Yet, in order to allow for standardized on-demand service request processing within the meaning of IT industrialization, these services appear too adapted to individual customer needs, particularly as they are subject to continuous changes in business requirements. In order to address this issue, a three-phase procedural model of IT service agreement configuration is introduced: IT services thus remain transformable and configurable via predefined complementary services which are selected by configuring a customer's individual service directory. In addition, the reutilization of modular commitments in order to compose service specifications aims to maintain standardized IT operations. Serving as a procedural reference model, these configuration phases are introduced in detail regarding activities, roles, techniques and data structure as developed and implemented in Action Research cooperation with two IT providers.Type:journal articleJournal:Enterprise Modelling and Information Systems ArchitecturesVolume:6Issue:2
