Item type:Publication, Corporate Responsibility in Europe : Government Involvement in Sector-Specific InitiativesThe sector-specific approach to Corporate Responsibility (CR) has attracted little attention so far, although the industrial sector is a key variable in any company's economic environment. Therefore, this book introduces sector-specific CR as a way to increase the success and impact of business engagement. It focuses on sector-specific initiatives with government involvement as appropriate governance mechanisms to address sustainability challenges through public-private collaboration. What is the state of sector-specific CR across Europe? How do sector-specific initiatives work and what are criteria for their good performance? What roles do governments play in such initiatives? To answer these questions, the book draws on rich empirical evidence from five industries across eight European countries as well as on the expertise of numerous CR and industry experts. In doing so, its target audience is both researchers and practitioners. Academics will find a starting point for further research in this emerging field, whereas practitioners are offered empirical and effective models for promoting sector-specific CR.Type:bookVolume:1. Item type:Publication, Corporate social responsibility : individual, institutional, and systemic perspectivesIn this article, we will develop our argument in three steps: In the following section, we will focus on economic theory and the way it deals with aspects regarding the life-world of citizens. We argue that concepts of sustainability need to be linked closely to the life-world of economic actors in order to be practically relevant. The term life-world refers to the values and sense-making processes of individuals, and it is specific to social, cultural, and institutional contexts. We will show that economics as an academic discipline still has a hard time dealing with these issues, which is why we suggest moving on from the classical ‘homo oeconomicus' model towards the concept of a ‘homo culturalis'. The third step of our argument focuses on the level of regulatory policy and its influence on corporate action. Beyond national regulation, modern regulatory policy also includes a wide range of new international modes of regulation, such as voluntary environmental and social standards. In times of intensifying global competition, such standards offer normative orientation when it comes to corporate responsibility. Therefore, they should be considered to be important stepping stones on our way towards a civilized market economy.Type:book section - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item type:Publication, From Body of Knowledge to Ways of Thinking : Theoretical Implications of Sector-specific CR in Europe(Verlag Bertelsmann Stiftung, 2013); ; ; ; Simeonov, SamuilThe main question of this final section of the book is: What theoretical lessons can we learn from sector-specific corporate responsibility in Europe? We will develop our argument in five steps:First, a perspective on cultural business ethics will be sketched that can be located between pure business perspectives, on the one hand, and pure normative perspectives on CR, on the other. Thus, cultural business ethics is characterised as a third way that emphasises the factual normative orientations of actors and the normative social dynamics in societies. Second, we will suggest a road leading from CR blue-prints to culturally embedded responsibility that is based on four still very general theoretical key elements: interests and power, institutional change, negotiation and deliberation, and the new role of actors. Third, based on per-spectives of the embeddedness of practices and their contextualisation, the merits of SCR will be outlined.Fourth, these merits will be analysed through the lenses of the following key dimensions: issues, actors, organizational fields, locality and modes of cooperation. Finally, we will draw attention to some shortcomings of a sectoral approach and sketch some theoretical-but also empirically applicable-perspectives for further research that stress cross-sectoral perspectives based on societal needs.Type:book section - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
