PublicationCapturing Value from Razor and Blade Business Models( 2016)Our study aims for a holistic analysis of all relevant elements of the razor and blade business model. In contrast to prior research that mostly discusses business models on an abstract level, we analyse the interplay between product and business model components and their interrelation with value creation, value capture and the protection of value capture. Building upon an in-depth study of eight cases, we develop archetypes of razor and blade business models based on the degree of separation of profit generation between base and complementary products. We advance a recently emerging discussion on capturing value from business model innovation by providing empirical evidence on how firms combine different formal and strategic forms of IP to protect their products and business models.Type: conference paper

PublicationKnowledge Protection Strategies of MNCs in Emerging Markets: The Influence of Ownership Structure( 2015-06-24)Practitioners tend to name knowledge spillovers from MNCs' emerging market subsidiaries to their competitors as a perpetual threat to sustainable firm performance, especially in the context of emerging markets' constrained market access and forced localization policies in combination with weak IP legislation. Nevertheless, western firms perform R&D in emerging markets to fulfil the requirements for market access and to better meet local customer needs, using informal protection strategies to protect their knowledge and IPR. The issue of firm-level characteristics on knowledge protection strategies that MNCs use in emerging markets as so far not been addressed by researchers. Thus, the aim of this paper is to investigate differences between knowledge protection strategies with regard to the ownership structure of firms. We collected data from six European MNCs that perform R&D in emerging markets. Our analysis shows how and why firms employ different protection strategies as well as in how far and why the use of and the success with individual protection strategies differs between family and nonfamily firms. We find that family firms rely more on and are more successful with preventive knowledge protection strategies, whereas nonfamily firms rely more on remedial protection strategies. Based on our insights, we derive implications for practitioners of western firms to improve the utilization of knowledge protection strategies in the future.Type: conference paper

PublicationThe Identification of Limiting and Enabling factors of the Organization on the Development of Platform-based ProductsEfficient und successful development of platform-based product architectures requires a thorough understanding of the organizational structure, its interaction with the product architecture and the development processes. As individual research papers in existing literature are mostly focused on single aspects of the organizational domain, an overview of possible influencing factors on platform-based product development is missing. This paper addresses this gap by thoroughly reviewing the literature to identify and categorize the relevant limitations and enablers that influence success of platform-based product architecture development.Type: conference paper
