Item type:Publication, The Role of Non-Profit Organizations in Accelerating Frugal InnovationDoing more with less for more, the central premise of frugal innovation, seeks simpler and better solutions for often underserved customers while minimizing the use of resources. To meet the needs of various stakeholders and source ideas from the largest pool possible, frugal innovators often engage in intersectoral collaboration. By focusing on non-profit organizations (NPOs) as alliance partners for Western social enterprises, this thesis reveals roles and levers that NPOs can use to accelerate this type of innovation. Looking at synergy-sensitive resources of NPOs, the thesis develops an initial framework based on the literature on business-to-NPO partnerships in emerging markets. The research then employs a series of expert and case interviews to validate and adapt this framework to the case of frugal innovation. It categorizes these resources into underlying assets and executable capabilities of the partner NPO to find six assets and 13 capabilities through which NPOs can accelerate frugal innovation, broken down into 14 sub-assets and 30 sub-capabilities. The research further employs multiple-case studies of four frugal innovations in the assistive technology market, spanning mobility and visual aids. Based on this case knowledge, the thesis introduces seven roles in which NPO partners can support the development and implementation of frugal innovationsIntroducer, Co-Developer, Implementer, Multiplier, Advisor, Promoter, and Funder.
