People value the availability of alternative means of transportation, even if they do not necessarily use them. In environmental economics, the phenomenon of non-consumptive benefits is referred to as option value and has been discussed for decades. In transport research, however, there have only been exploratory attempts to empirically survey this benefit component. This is astonishing, as political and economic decisions are made against the background of considerable option values: Investments in infrastructures and means of transportation, but also the design of subscriptions and insurance policies create an option benefit. A representative study in Switzerland shows that an average option value of CHF 460 per person per year can be expected for regular commutes to work or education alone.
