Item type:Publication, Markets, Handbook of Social TheoryThis entry provides an introduction to the Encyclopedia of Global Social Theory. We explain how social theory has in recent decades sought to shed its Western-centric baggage, and how key terms and debates in social theory have been revised to take account of global pluralism. We then provide a brief overview of the four distinct parts of the Encyclopedia. Contributions in the first part discuss the different ways in which social theory has responded to critiques of its Western-centric assumptions and explore how it can remain relevant in a globalising world. Contributions in the second part examine how specific social theories conceptualise the global social order or are useful for understanding globalisation processes. The third part brings together chapters that reflect on the ‘global situatedness’ and ‘internationalisation’ of different regional strands of social theory, and the fourth part focuses on key terms and debates that are central to contemporary global social thought.Type:book sectionJournal:Elgar Encyclopedia
