    Prediction, hype, and fear: Advancing Information Systems research in “the AI age”

    Information Systems (IS) research is well-positioned but under-equipped to study technological futures at a time when claims about artificial intelligence (AI) are reshaping investment, policy, and public discourse. This perspective advances three arguments. First, IS scholarship should engage more systematically with digital futures, drawing on approaches for reasoning under uncertainty, such as Bayesian methods and established Futures Studies techniques, to distinguish prediction, projection, possibility, and hype. Second, technology hype is itself a legitimate object of IS research, and widely used frameworks such as the Gartner Hype Cycle appear limited in their ability to inform practice. Third, AI serves as a critical test case, combining heavy supply-side investment with unproven demand-side impact and unresolved questions of value and consequence. We propose four analytically distinct lenses for studying AI, namely, capability, adoption, value, and consequence, and identify two underexamined blind spots: bad actors deploying AI at scale and structural over-dependence on imperfect AI. We invite contributions to the Journal of Information Technology that examine how claims about technological futures are produced, circulated, institutionalized, resisted, and realized.

    Continuous value shaping: A boundary concept for innovating service innovation approaches

    Technological advancements and evolving value orientations reshape future value creation and pose new requirements for service innovation. While a variety of disciplines are developing new approaches to drive service innovation, this is primarily done in isolation and generates only fragmented solutions. Sociological theory has proposed “boundary objects” as an effective umbrella for communication and cooperation among communities. Therefore, we introduce continuous value shaping (CVS) as a boundary object describing service innovation approaches along five principles. We reflect on this concept through the different disciplinary lenses of researchers in service marketing, information systems, service engineering, sociology of work, and innovation management. These perspectives highlight how the CVS principles already connect to discourses within the individual disciplines. However, the CVS concept will not only provide an umbrella to embrace existing activities in different academic disciplines. It also assists to identify research themes that will benefit from uniting the power of these disciplines, and it can serve as an integrating framework to conceptualize complex service innovation approaches. Thus, the CVS concept should guide both researchers and practitioners to develop and implement novel innovation and transformation efforts—in and across organizations.

    Rethinking technology regulation in the age of AI risks

    This paper argues that artificial intelligence exposes the shortcomings of traditional regulatory paradigms, challenging Easterbrook’s ‘Law of the Horse’ view that general legal principles suffice. AI’s opacity, autonomy, and systemic risks demand risk-informed, technology-specific governance. We identify the pacing problem, where innovation outstrips regulatory capacity, and propose a tripartite framework distinguishing functional, structural, and relational risks. Comparative analysis of EU, US, UK, and Chinese approaches highlights divergent logics of precaution, market oversight, hybrid flexibility, and state control. Effective governance requires embedding risk into policy design through adaptive, proportionate, and harmonised mechanisms, balancing innovation with accountability. The paper underscores the urgency of global coordination and calls for interdisciplinary IS research to inform anticipatory, participatory, and ethically grounded regulation.

    SynDEc: A Synthetic Data Ecosystem
    Given the critical role of data availability for growth and innovation in financial services, especially small and mid-sized banks lack the data volumes required to fully leverage AI advancements for enhancing fraud detection, operational efficiency, and risk management. With existing solutions facing challenges in scalability, inconsistent standards, and complex privacy regulations, we introduce a synthetic data sharing ecosystem (SynDEc) using generative AI. Employing design science research in collaboration with two banks, among them UnionBank of the Philippines, we developed and validated a synthetic data sharing ecosystem for financial institutions. The derived design principles highlight synthetic data setup, training configurations, and incentivization. Furthermore, our findings show that smaller banks benefit most from SynDEcs and our solution is viable even with limited participation. Thus, we advance data ecosystem design knowledge, show its viability for financial services, and offer practical guidance for privacy-resilient synthetic data sharing, laying groundwork for future applications of SynDEcs.

    A guide for structured literature reviews in business research: The state-of-the-art and how to integrate generative artificial intelligence
    Generative artificial intelligence (Gen.AI) is capable of significantly improving the breadth and depth of structured literature reviews (SLRs). However, its inclusion raises essential questions regarding the review’s methodology, quality, and ethical implications. Previous research predominantly focused on the capabilities and limitations of Gen.AI to establish guidelines for research practices. However, the rapid evolution of Gen.AI often outpaces the publication of methodological papers. In response, our study adopts a criteria-centric approach, scrutinizing the scientific quality standards that Gen.AI must meet. In other words, instead of discussing what Gen.AI can and cannot do, we discuss what we should allow Gen.AI to do, irrespective of its capabilities. Our study informs researchers in the art and science of SLRs. First, we analyze the established state-of-the-art processes and associated quality standards in SLRs. From this, we synthesize a unified process and criterion set, not only underpinning a comprehensive understanding of the extant SLR methodologies but also serving as the foundational framework for integrating Gen.AI. Second, we delineate the specific scenarios conducive to incorporating Gen.AI into this fundamental framework, as well as situations where its integration may not be suitable. Our contribution is further solidified by providing a detailed, step-by-step guide—akin to a “cooking recipe”—to effectively integrate Gen.AI in SLRs, ensuring adherence to established quality criteria.

    The accelerating digital transformation of manufacturing is enhancing automation and production efficiency while requiring employees to develop new skills to meet evolving demands. This case study examines how Siemens embedded a human-centric, bottom-up approach to empower employee re- and upskilling through innovative digital learning. Aligned with Siemens’s actions, we present a four-phase model on leveraging information systems to address skill gaps, enhance adaptability and tackle re- and upskilling challenges. We also provide five recommendations to help organizations foster lifelong learning in dynamic manufacturing environments.

    Emerging phenomena like the increasing volume and variety of available data, machine learning techniques, and, most recently, Generative AI are reshaping our research practices, affording new research methods for testing and developing theory. In this editorial, we discuss our two major observations from running the ‘Next-generation IS Research Methods’ Special Issue: (1) the need for research methods that enhance our understanding of complex and dynamic phenomena and (2) Generative AI as (potential) productivity enhancer. We compile these observations into an organizing framework and discuss possibilities for applying Generative AI in the fields of qualitative, quantitative, and engaged research. We highlight challenges that might occur when applying Generative AI in research and shed light on the changing role of researchers in such settings of human–AI collaboration.

    Promoting students’ motivation in language education with gamified pedagogical conversational agents

    Pedagogical conversational agents (PCAs) like chatbots are a novel approach to technology-mediated language learning with artificial intelligence. They convey learning content interactively and accompany students in their education. However, many users find conversations with PCAs unmotivating. Gamification is a suitable solution to these motivational hurdles due to its playful nature. Given the difficulty of selecting the appropriate game elements and the scarcity of design recommendations for gamified PCAs, we propose the GNPL framework including a cohesive set of four design principles: goal-setting and reflection, novice-expert relationship, performance-related motivation, and learning story narration. In two design cycles, the article shows the application of the design principles in English learning – a domain commonly associated with motivational challenges – by implementing and evaluating a gamified PCA. The results show that the design principles significantly foster learners' motivation and that learners perceive a solid language learning experience, expressed by higher perceived value and social factors. They highlight the relevance of aligning the PCA's social role, the motivational impact of gamification, and the educational goals of the learning context. The design principles guide educators and developers in gamified PCA design. The paper contributes to the theory stream of PCAs by investigating learners' motivation enhancement when using PCAs. In addition, the paper provides new knowledge on meaningful gamification in an unexplored context and practical insights to solve the design challenges of selecting game elements in this context. Furthermore, it shows how language education can be supported by educational technology.

    Long Live the Metaverse: Identifying the Potential for Market Disruption and Future Research

    The Metaverse represents a transformative frontier, blending physical and virtual realities into immersive, persistent digital environments. This article explores the foundational components, emerging markets, and critical challenges shaping the Metaverse’s evolution. Although initial industry enthusiasm has been tempered by financial setbacks and shifting priorities toward generative artificial intelligence (AI), the Metaverse remains nascent, following a familiar hype cycle with other disruptive technologies. Drawing parallels with historical technological breakthroughs, we argue that continued hardware, software, and telecommunications advancements will unlock the Metaverse’s potential for profound societal and economic impact. We explore the potential for business approaches and collaborative efforts across various market sectors, including consumer goods and commercial services, as well as healthcare and industrial realms. To do so, we explain how technologies like virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and extended reality (XR) increase user participation through consuming content that creates a sense of presence while at the same time outlining Metaverse challenges, risks, technological difficulties, and sociotechnical factors. By dissecting specific use cases and proposing strategies for managing challenges like data privacy, security, and inclusivity, we chart a path for researchers and practitioners to foster innovation. The article concludes with a call to action for researchers to lead visionary efforts, urging them to anticipate and shape the future possibilities of the Metaverse beyond current technological and market constraints. By breaking down the Metaverse into targeted applications, this work provides a roadmap for advancing theory, design, and practice to unlock the Metaverse’s full disruptive potential. We challenge the notion that the Metaverse is “dead,” instead framing it as an enduring societal and economic transformation catalyst.
